Can I just get traditional physical therapy if I don’t want to do dry needling?
Absolutely. We can work together to find a treatment approach you are most comfortable with.
What do I need to do to begin?
The state of Georgia requires a physician’s prescription for physical therapy for a therapist to perform dry needling. I recommend emailing your doctor through your patient portal or calling them and asking for an e-mailed or faxed prescription for physical therapy. It doesn’t have to specify dry needling, it just needs to be a prescription or order for physical therapy.
*If you only want to receive physical therapy, no referral is needed
Will it hurt?
Most needles just feel like a pinch when inserted; remember these needles are tiny compared to the needles we get common vaccinations with. Generally many of the needles will hardly be felt at all, and some of them will be tender. Once they are in and you relax, they are usually pain-free for the duration of treatment.
How many times should I get needled?
There is no cookie cutter approach to your pain. Sometimes pain is nearly gone after 1 treatment. Other more chronic pains will require several treatments and may be augmented with an exercise program. I recommend starting with 3 treatments and monitoring your body’s response.
Some patients with chronic conditions such as MS or fibromyalgia benefit from monthly “tune-ups” for high pain areas.
How long will it take?
The longer needles are left in, the more benefits a patient will experience up to a point. I aim to leave needles in for a minimum of 20 minutes if tolerated.
What is the cost?
$125 a session for in-home treatment. Price decreases to $115 per person if two people are at the same home. First session including evaluation is $155.
Is it the same as acupuncture?
No, however it is the same needles being used. Acupuncture is an eastern medicine approach, based on Traditional Chinese Medicine aimed at restoring energy flow and balance. Dry needling takes a musculoskeletal approach to relieving pain and restoring normal motion by targeting specific muscles, tendons, and even bony surfaces to stimulate healing.
Will my insurance cover the visit?
No. This is a cash-pay, in-home service that does not bill through insurance.
